An Ngo's story

The fear of a cancer diagnosis is very real. An’s story is one of facing the fear and anxiety around breast cancer and screening and overcoming them. Having a breast screen can provide peace of mind, even if, like An, you are feeling healthy and well.

There is a history of cancer in my family, so I was well aware of the grief it can cause individuals and their loved ones. When I was younger, my father was diagnosed with lung and prostate cancer.

As I grew older, I knew I should schedule a breast screen (mammogram) appointment. Yet, as I’d never had a breast screen, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. To say I was nervous would be an understatement.

Besides the nervousness, what I ruminated on most was being diagnosed with cancer, like my father.

I mustered up all the courage I had and went to my appointment.

For all that built-up apprehension, anxiety and fear, the process was so much easier than what I thought it would be. The radiographer was so kind and knowledgeable, and she made it quick and painless.

Thankfully, my results all came back normal. This meant I could get back to doing the things I enjoyed in life - looking after my family and spending time with friends. I was told to come back again in 2 years for my next breast screen as it’s important to maintain regular screening.
